The process

How we homologate your degree

The homologation process follows a sequential path regulated by the Ministerio de Sanidad under Real Decreto 459/2010.

01

Homologate Your Base Degree

Obtain the Ministerio de Universidades homologation of your medical licenciatura or grado first.

02

Prepare & Certify All Documents

Gather, legalise or apostille, translate, and scan all required documents in numbered PDF format.

03

Pay the Fee & Submit Application

Pay €166.50 via Modelo 790 and submit your complete electronic dossier to the Ministerio de Sanidad.

04

Informe de Comprobación Previa

Ministry verifies your specialty training duration against EU equivalency standards.

05

Ministry Evaluation & Resolution

Ministerio de Sanidad issues a resolution granting or denying professional recognition of your specialist title.

06

Register & Start Practising

With a positive resolution, register with the relevant Colegio de Médicos and begin your specialist career in Spain.

Requirements

Six regulatory conditions must be met before the Ministerio de Sanidad accepts your specialist title application.

1
Your base medical degree (licenciatura/grado) must already be homologated by the Ministerio de Universidades before applying.
2
Training must come from an officially accredited specialty programme — master's degrees, títulos propios, and professional experience do not qualify.
3
Your foreign specialty must correspond to a specialty listed in Annex I of Royal Decree 183/2008.
4
Accredited training duration must be equivalent to EU standards, verified via the Informe de Comprobación Previa.
5
You must submit a sworn declaration that the title has never been previously homologated or recognised in Spain or any EU country.
6
Applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries must hold a B2 Spanish certificate from the Instituto Cervantes.

At the time of official submission, the Ministry fee (€166.50) must be paid. Our team reviews all your documentation beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

How much does specialist doctor homologation in Spain cost?+
The official Ministerio de Sanidad application fee is €166.50, paid via Modelo 790 (code 107). Additional costs may include certified translations, apostilles, and the separate base degree homologation fee.
How long does specialist title homologation take in Spain?+
The process typically takes 12 to 24 months, depending on document completeness and Ministry workload. Ensuring a complete, error-free dossier from the start significantly reduces waiting time.
Do I need to homologate my medical degree before applying for specialist recognition?+
Yes — the Ministerio de Universidades homologation of your base medical degree is a mandatory prerequisite. You cannot start the specialist recognition process without it.
Which foreign specialist titles are eligible for recognition in Spain?+
Only titles corresponding to specialties listed in Annex I of Royal Decree 183/2008 are eligible. The training must come from an officially accredited specialty programme — not a university master's or título propio.
Do Latin American doctors need a Spanish language certificate?+
Native Spanish speakers from Latin America are generally exempt from this requirement. Only applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries must provide a B2 certificate from the Instituto Cervantes.
What is the Informe de Comprobación Previa?+
It is a preliminary verification report issued by the Ministerio de Sanidad assessing whether your accredited training duration is equivalent to EU standards. It is a key step before the final resolution.
Can I use professional experience or a master's degree to support my application?+
No — professional experience, university master's degrees, and supplementary training do not count toward the equivalency assessment. Only official, accredited specialty programmes are valid.
What happens if my specialist title has already been recognised in another EU country?+
You must declare any prior EU recognition in your sworn statement. A previous favourable recognition in an EU country may affect or disqualify your application in Spain.
What format must documents be submitted in?+
All documents must be scanned in PDF format — JPG or photo formats are not accepted. They must be numbered and ordered according to the official index provided with the application form.
Which Ministry handles specialist doctor homologation in Spain?+
The Ministerio de Sanidad manages specialist title recognition under Real Decreto 459/2010. The underlying medical degree homologation is handled separately by the Ministerio de Universidades.
Can I work as a specialist doctor in Spain while my homologation is pending?+
Generally, you cannot practise as a recognised specialist until the Ministerio de Sanidad issues a positive resolution. Some supervised or research roles may be available — consult the relevant Colegio de Médicos.
What does a positive homologation resolution allow me to do?+
A positive resolution grants your foreign specialist title the same professional effects as the corresponding Spanish specialist title listed in Annex I of Royal Decree 183/2008. You can then register with the Colegio de Médicos and practise your specialty in Spain.
Are there additional costs during the homologation process?+
Yes, when making the official submission, a Ministry fee must be paid (€166.50). Prior to this, our team will have reviewed all your documentation to ensure it meets the established criteria. This cost applies to all professions except medical specialist.
