Why homologating your medical degree is essential
Without homologation, your degree does not legally exist outside the country where you obtained it. No foreign hospital can hire you, no medical insurer can cover you, and no professional college will admit you. This guide explains exactly what it is, how it works and why it's the mandatory first step to practice abroad.
What exactly is medical degree homologation?
Homologation is the administrative procedure by which a foreign country's ministry recognizes that your medical degree (or nursing, dentistry, psychology, physiotherapy, nutrition) is equivalent to the official degree of its educational system. It's an act of legal equivalence: your degree issued by the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the Mexican UNAM or the Universidad Central de Venezuela becomes legally equal to a degree issued by a Spanish, French or British university.
It's not the same as validation (convalidación). Validation recognizes individual subjects or partial studies (typically to continue education). Homologation recognizes the full degree and, once granted, qualifies you to register with the professional college, sign a hospital contract, prescribe medication and issue medical leave. Without homologation, no public or private healthcare system can legally hire you as a doctor.
Why homologation is essential (not optional)
A hospital contract is impossible without it. Every public or private healthcare network requires official accreditation of the degree before signing any employment contract. A hospital cannot have you on staff with a non-homologated degree: it would breach the country's healthcare regulation and lose its operating license. This applies to 100% of legal employers: Spanish SNS, British NHS, DHA hospitals in Dubai, MOHAP in UAE, ANS in France, SCFHS in Saudi Arabia, QCHP in Qatar, MOH in Oman.
Work visa blocked without it. To obtain a skilled work visa you must demonstrate that the job you'll perform meets the destination country's professional requirements. The consulate requests the ministerial homologation resolution or equivalent document. Without prior homologation or one in process with favorable resolution, the consulate denies the visa. This is the most common reason for rejected healthcare professional visas.
Professional liability insurance unreachable. No foreign insurer covers the professional liability of a healthcare practitioner without a homologated degree. This means you cannot practice even privately or at your own clinic: any medical act would be uncovered in case of claim. Homologation is prerequisite for any professional liability policy.
Mandatory professional registration depends on it. No medical, nursing, dental or physiotherapy college admits you without a homologated degree. Registration is mandatory to practice in Spain, UK, France and most EU countries. In the Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Oman) ministerial licensing replaces college registration but equally requires equivalent degree verification.
How the homologation process works
The process varies by destination country but follows a common structure: (1) collection of academic and professional documents in your home country, (2) apostille or consular legalization, (3) sworn translation into the destination's official language, (4) submission to the competent ministry or health authority, (5) document evaluation and, if applicable, aptitude test or exam, (6) administrative resolution. Timelines: 6-8 months in Spain, 3-5 months in UAE and Saudi Arabia, 5-7 months in UK, 6-8 months in France.
Common errors that delay the process: non-apostilled documents, non-sworn translations, incomplete academic transcripts, missing internship or social service certificates, expired professional registrations, and omission of the aptitude test when required (Spain requires aptitude tests in some specialties, UAE requires Prometric or DHA equivalent exam, UK requires PLAB or IELTS+OSCE). Each error adds 1-3 months to the total timeline.
How much medical degree homologation costs
Cost depends on destination country and service level. Official administrative fees: Spain €110-€180 per specialty, UK £600-£1,200 for GMC + PLAB, UAE AED 1,500-2,500 for DHA. Real total cost (including translations, apostilles, administrative agency, courier): between €800 and €3,500 depending on destination. Bookahospi charges from €225 for full Spain homologation (general) and from €800 for UK/France, all-inclusive with no surprises.
