Good Standing Certificate: what it is and when you need it
The Good Standing Certificate (in Spanish, "certificado de idoneidad") is issued by your professional college — medical, nursing, etc. — and confirms you're authorised to practise, with no sanctions or open disciplinary cases. It isn't the same as your degree recognition, even though the two often get confused because they show up in the same journey.
What it actually certifies
The document confirms you are (or have been) registered with a professional college, that there are no sanctions or prohibitions on your record, and that you're considered fit to practise your profession. In Spain it's issued by the relevant General Council of professional colleges, based on records from the provincial college where you're registered. Issuance is usually free and the certificate has a limited validity — typically 3 months — so it's worth requesting only once you know exactly which process you'll use it for.
When it will actually be requested
To register with a college in a new country
After your degree is recognised in Spain, you need to register with a professional college to practise — some colleges ask for this certificate from your home country as part of the file.
To practise in another EU country
If you're already registered in Spain and want to work in another European country, the certificate proves your standing to the new destination college, under directive 2005/36/EC.
For verification processes in the Gulf
Hospitals and health ministries in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Qatar often require an equivalent good-conduct certificate as part of the DataFlow process or SCFHS/DHA licensing.
For telemedicine or international cooperation
Telemedicine companies and healthcare NGOs request it as proof that your professional standing is in order before hiring you.
What it is NOT
The Good Standing Certificate doesn't replace degree recognition or professional college registration. It's an additional document certifying your professional conduct, not a recognition of your academic training. If you haven't recognised your degree yet, that's the step that comes first — the Good Standing Certificate comes later, once you're already registered somewhere.
