Working as an anesthesiologist in Saudi Arabia in 2026: premium salaries, SCFHS licensing and hospitals hiring now

Every anesthesiologist who wants to practice in Saudi Arabia must complete official recognition by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). It is the legal license to operate. Without it, no Saudi hospital can hire you, no work visa is issued and no medical malpractice insurance covers you.

The process has 4 pillars:

Anesthesiology Prometric Exam: official exam in English, 150 specific anesthesia questions — anesthetic pharmacology, monitoring, complications, difficult airway management, regional anesthesia, obstetric and pediatric anesthesia, acute and chronic pain, perioperative critical care. 3 hours, minimum 60% to pass.

3. SCFHS Classification: you are assigned a rank (Specialist, Senior Specialist or Consultant) that decides which hospitals can hire you and at what salary.

4. MUMARIS+ Registration: activation on the Ministry of Health digital platform. Without an active MUMARIS+ you cannot legally deliver anesthesia.

Official specialty in Anesthesiology and Reanimation (MIR in Spain, formal certified residency in Latin America, European or American board). SCFHS rejects non-formal residencies.

At least 2 post-residency years for Specialist.

At least 5–7 years for Senior Specialist. At least 10 years + head-of-service role for Consultant.

Clinical English B2/C1. Arabic not required.

Desirable certifications (heavily weighted in SCFHS classification): current ACLS, ATLS, PALS if you cover pediatrics, POCUS ultrasound training, difficult airway course, regional anesthesia certifications (ESRA, ASRA).

Typical anesthesiologist contracts in the Saudi private sector offer a base 40–48-hour work week + on-calls paid separately. Most hospitals have moved away from "on-call included in base salary": if you cover an on-call, it is paid extra.

Home on-call: SAR 1,500–3,500 per shift depending on hospital.

In-hospital on-call: SAR 4,000–7,000 per shift + activation hours paid on top.

Weekend elective anesthesia (private bariatric, plastic surgery): additional sessions paid SAR 3,000–6,000/session.
