How to get your medical degree recognized in Spain as a foreigner

Recognizing a medical degree in Spain is a regulated process by the Ministry of Health. For degrees from Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia, the average timeline is 6-8 months when handled from origin with the right documents. Bookahospi files the complete dossier: apostilled legalization, sworn translation, study equivalence and, if required, aptitude test.

Specialties like cardiology, anesthesiology, pediatrics or gynecology also require accrediting your specialist training. If you trained in a MIR program or LATAM equivalent, your specialty may be automatically recognized. We confirm this in the €19.99 initial analysis and, if you upgrade to the full plan, we discount those €19.99 from the final price.

I signed my hospital contract without leaving Bogotá. Bookahospi handled the credential recognition, Zoom interviews and visa. I flew to Madrid with everything sorted. I've been here for two years earning 4× what I made in Colombia.

FAQ

What we get asked the most

If you have a question that isn't here, write to us. We reply in less than 24h.

How can the hospital sign with me if I'm not in Spain yet?
The contract is signed electronically with legal validity in Spain (Law 6/2020 on electronic trust services). The hospital issues an official offer letter that the Spanish consulate accepts to process your work visa. This practice is standard in healthcare and we use it with every hospital in our network.
Who pays for the visa and consular paperwork?
The hospital sponsors your work visa (employee visa). You only cover minor consular fees in your home country (~€150). Bookahospi prepares all documentation and guides you through the consular appointment.
How long does the full process take from sign-up?
Average timeline is 6-8 months: 2-3 months for credential recognition + interviews + contract signing, 1-2 months for visa, 1-2 months for the hospital to coordinate your start date. Urgent cases with the Express add-on come down to 4-5 months.
What happens if my visa is denied after signing the contract?
It's very rare because a contract signed by a Spanish hospital removes the main denial reason (lack of job offer). In the unlikely event of unjustified denial, we file an appeal. If it isn't resolved, we fully refund what you paid for homologation.
Do I have to pay for homologation before having a contract?
You start the process with €225 (credential analysis + file opening). Subsequent payments are planned to align with key milestones: after the first successful interview, after contract signing, etc. Average total: €500-895 general / €1,000-1,795 with specialty. Zero travel costs until everything is signed.
Is my degree from Colombia / Mexico / Ecuador valid in Spain?
Yes. Doctors, nurses, dentists, psychologists, physiotherapists and nutritionists trained in LATAM are homologable in Spain. The Ministry of Health recognizes the studies through a regulated process that Bookahospi guides you through step by step. Historical success rate: 94%.
Can I bring my family with me?
Yes. Once you have the work visa, your spouse and children apply for family reunification. Bookahospi guides you through the process. Many hospitals also offer family relocation support (flights, first month's rent).
How much does a foreign cardiologist earn in Spain?
A cardiologist with homologated credentials in Spain earns €72,000–€110,000 gross per year in private hospitals, and €52,000–€78,000 in the National Health System. Interventional cardiology sits at the top of the range. Bookahospi matches you with hospitals based on your experience and target salary.
Can I work in Spain with a medical degree from Colombia, Mexico or Venezuela?
Yes. Medical, nursing, dentistry, psychology, physiotherapy and nutrition degrees from Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia are recognizable in Spain. Bookahospi historical success rate: 94%. We handle everything from your country, including apostilled legalization and sworn translation.
Which medical specialties are most in demand in Spain?
In 2026 the specialties with the highest shortage in Spain are anesthesiology, family medicine, pediatrics, radiology, geriatrics, psychiatry and internal medicine. Cardiology and orthopedics see high demand in private hospitals. If your specialty is on this list, hospitals will sign from origin with almost no negotiation.
Do I need Catalan, Galician or Basque to work in Spanish hospitals?
For private hospitals and most of the National Health System you don't need co-official languages: Spanish is enough. In Catalonia some public positions value Catalan but rarely require it from foreigners. Bookahospi prioritizes offers in Madrid, Valencia, Andalusia and Aragon where Spanish is the only required language.
Is it better to work in a private hospital or in the National Health System (SNS)?
Private: 20-35% higher salaries, faster contract, more flexible schedule, ideal to start a career in Spain. SNS: public exam, lifetime tenure, subsidized continuing education and prestige. Bookahospi guides you based on your profile and goals: short-term we recommend private to work from origin, mid-term apply to SNS if you want a tenured position.
